November 13, 2025, marks the 60th anniversary of the Yarmouth Castle disaster. The 38-year-old cruise ship caught fire during an overnight voyage to Nassau, killing 90 people. The tragedy led to major updates to Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations, shaping the fire-prevention standards used on modern ships today.

Despite its impact, the Yarmouth Castle is largely forgotten today—overshadowed by better-known shipwrecks like the Titanic or the Edmund Fitzgerald. This is despite Gordon Lightfoot’s “Ballad of Yarmouth Castle,” which has helped to keep the story alive.

Sixty years later, we remember the lives lost and acknowledge the lasting safety reforms born from that tragic night. May they never be forgotten.
